UiPath adds AI agents to automate enterprise testing

UiPath has announced new and planned additions to its Test Cloud platform, focused on making software testing more autonomous for enterprise teams.

The changes are designed to help quality engineering teams run tests with less manual work, explore applications with AI agents and automate more of the testing process.

Test Cloud is positioned as a central platform for managing and orchestrating testing across an application portfolio. The latest additions are part of UiPath's broader effort to build what it calls a dark testing factory, where testing operates continuously rather than through manually maintained test cases.

The approach reflects a broader shift in software development, as testing teams face pressure to keep up with faster code production and more frequent application changes. UiPath argues that traditional test automation still depends heavily on people to write scripts, run tests, investigate failures and update automations when applications change, increasing maintenance demands.

One new function is autonomous test execution. UiPath said its Autopilot assistant for testing teams can interpret a manual test and execute it against an application without prebuilt automation.

Another addition is autonomous exploration. In this model, testers define a goal for an AI agent, which then explores an application, investigates possible issues and reports its findings for review.

UiPath is also adding tools for testing AI-infused applications and AI agents, where outputs may vary between runs. Teams will be able to use semantic and AI-based verification through user interface and application programming interface interactions to assess whether an application achieved its intended outcome.

A further element is integration with Playwright, the open-source framework for end-to-end web application testing. Organisations already using Playwright will be able to run those tests through Test Manager and connect them to broader test management and orchestration without replacing their existing framework.

UiPath is also introducing UiPath Delegate, which it describes as a computer-use agent that can automate routine workflows around test runs while testers remain responsible for triage and quality decisions.

Maintenance pressure

UiPath argues that software testing needs to move beyond automating individual cases. In its view, testing should respond to application changes, identify where testing is needed, execute work, interpret results and maintain coverage across an application portfolio with less direct intervention.

Quality engineering professionals would still set the conditions for testing, resolve ambiguity and remain responsible for risk and release decisions. That would shift their role away from manually running tests and toward oversight of testing quality and operational controls.

That is the path toward our dark testing factory vision, where testing operates with the autonomy and governance expected of a fully orchestrated business process," Weishaar said.

Broader context

The announcement highlights how software suppliers are trying to apply AI agents not only to coding but also to quality assurance, an area that has often remained labour-intensive despite years of automation investment. For large organisations with extensive application estates, the burden of maintaining test scripts as interfaces and workflows change has remained a persistent cost.

By linking manual tests, AI-driven exploration, variable-output verification and third-party frameworks such as Playwright in one testing environment, UiPath aims to make its platform more relevant to enterprise development teams that use a mix of tools and testing methods.

The new functions are being introduced in stages, with some due to become available in public preview and others slated for release later in the year. The changes suggest UiPath sees testing as a key area for expanding the use of AI agents in business software operations.
