ShareGate has launched Entra ID migration for Microsoft 365 tenant-to-tenant moves, adding identity migration to its existing mailbox and workload migration tools.

The feature is aimed at IT teams moving between Microsoft 365 tenants, a process that often requires separate tools for identity, mailboxes and collaboration data. Users can now manage identity, mailbox and workload migration in a single product.

Teams can plan the sequence of a move with identities first, followed by mailboxes and workloads such as Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams. Before moving files or mailboxes, users can review and amend mappings for users and groups, identify conflicts and validate identities.

The tool supports migration of user accounts, security groups, Microsoft 365 groups and group memberships. It also includes licence assignment through CSV files, pre-execution conflict detection, deterministic validation of identity mappings and the ability to re-run migration waves as projects change.

Users can view identity decisions in one place, see conflict flags before execution and override automated matches with manual mappings where needed. That reflects a common concern in tenant-to-tenant projects, where identity and permission issues can emerge before the underlying data move is complete.

Richard Harbridge, Principal Industry Advisor at ShareGate, described identity planning as a pressure point in these projects.

"I've seen many tenant-to-tenant migrations run into trouble before a single mailbox or workload moves. Identity conflicts surface mid-run, and suddenly, you're making decisions under pressure with users already affected. Having Entra ID, mailbox, and workloads in one tool means you resolve those conflicts during planning, with full visibility into what will be created, updated, or skipped before anything runs. That's the difference between a migration you control and one that controls you," said Richard Harbridge, Principal Industry Advisor, ShareGate.

Microsoft 365 tenant-to-tenant migrations are commonly used in mergers, divestments and internal restructurings, where users, permissions and collaboration data must move to a new environment with limited disruption. In those cases, identity mapping is central because access rights and group memberships must align with mailboxes and shared content in the destination tenant.

The addition expands ShareGate's coverage across key stages of Microsoft 365 migration work. ShareGate also sells governance tools for Microsoft 365 environments and is developed by Workleap Technologies, a software company based in Montréal.

Early users said the identity function changed how they approached migration planning. One customer said identity work could now be completed before mailbox migration begins.

"We tested Entra ID Migration before it was widely available, and it's already changed how we think about tenant migrations. Identity is handled before we ever touch a mailbox. That's not something we could say before," said Nebojsa Prokic, Cloud Architect, SoftwareOne.

Another user said the main challenge in tenant-to-tenant projects often lies outside the actual transfer of data: understanding relationships between users, permissions and dependencies before cutover.

"Anyone who's worked through a tenant-to-tenant migration knows the data move is only part of the challenge. The real work is understanding identities, permissions, and dependencies before cutover. ShareGate's Entra ID Migration gave us visibility into those relationships early, which meant fewer surprises and a lot more confidence when it was time to execute," said Kevin Meija, Project Engineer, Kite Technology Group.

ShareGate plans further work on identity management, including filters to sort users by status, type and mapping state; bulk updates for mapping decisions, licence assignments and domain mappings; and automated onboarding after migration. It is also investing in device migration as it works to cover more of the tenant-to-tenant process.

The new release is offered under a flat-rate subscription with unlimited users and data.
