Rocket Doctor AI brings virtual healthcare to rural Alberta

Tue, 16th Sep 2025

Rocket Doctor AI has entered a partnership with the Town of Bruderheim, Alberta, to provide local residents with access to virtual healthcare services fully covered by the province's health system.

The partnership introduces Rocket Doctor's physician-led, AI-powered digital platform to the town in Alberta's Industrial Heartland. Residents will be able to book video and audio appointments with licensed Alberta medical professionals for urgent care, chronic disease management, preventive health, and comprehensive primary care. The services are available without user fees and will be offered wherever patients choose to access them.

The initial agreement will run for one year from its launch, with a framework for an automatic annual renewal under the same terms. The collaboration aims to address the challenges faced by rural communities, such as limited healthcare access, staff shortages, and the significant distances residents often need to travel for care.

Healthcare in rural communities

In Bruderheim, with its population of approximately 1,400, reliable access to healthcare can be hampered by systemic pressures, limited staff availability, and longer travel times. The Government of Alberta has previously acknowledged these disparities through the introduction of the Rural Health Action Plan (2024–2027), physician incentive programs, and expanded virtual care offerings. The partnership with Rocket Doctor aligns with these measures, offering rural residents timely access to medical professionals through technology supported by their provincial health insurance.

"Access to high-quality healthcare covered by our Alberta Health is essential, especially in smaller municipalities like ours," said Phyllis Forsyth, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Bruderheim. "This partnership ensures that residents can connect with medical professionals more easily, helping us build a healthier, more resilient community."

Rural residents not only face logistical barriers but also typically encounter higher health risks, fewer mental health resources, and longer wait times than their urban counterparts. Recruiting and retaining doctors in such areas remains a persistent obstacle. By offering virtual consultations with Alberta-licensed doctors, the service is designed to help local authorities alleviate pressure on existing health facilities and respond to provincial staffing challenges.

Dr William Cherniak, Chief Executive Officer of Rocket Doctor Inc, commented on the collaboration's milestone status for the company. He said,

"Partnering with Bruderheim is a milestone moment for Rocket Doctor as we launch our first municipal collaboration. We are committed to partnering with the public healthcare system, and serving communities that face challenges in accessing timely and accessible healthcare. By working together with local leaders, we can deliver innovative solutions leveraging the most advanced technology to strengthen the health and well-being of residents and public health infrastructure, starting right here in Alberta."

The Rocket Doctor platform aims to reduce the administrative workload for clinicians while maintaining consistent standards in care, allowing professionals to focus on patient interactions. The company has built its system - including its Global Library of Medicine, an AI-powered decision support resource - through collaboration with medical professionals internationally. Rocket Doctor reports that it is committed to reaching patients in underserved, rural, and remote communities across Canada, where access to family doctors can be limited.
