OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Space, a collaboration feature for teams in ChatGPT, aimed at Pro, Business and Enterprise users.

The feature gives organisations a shared area where colleagues can work with ChatGPT around a common body of information. Teams can create a dedicated space in which staff, the chatbot and a company-specific assistant build on shared knowledge.

ChatGPT can organise the space based on user instructions, helping teams find material more quickly and return to previous work without starting again.

ChatGPT Space is available through the ChatGPT desktop application and on the web for eligible paid plans. On mobile, users can find, read and share pages, while creation and editing will be added later.

The launch is part of a broader update to OpenAI's workplace products. Alongside ChatGPT Space, OpenAI introduced additions across ChatGPT, Codex, application programming interfaces and plugin tools for developers.

Work tools

Developers can now run Codex on a computer, remotely from a phone, or in the cloud from any device. OpenAI also introduced reusable development environments designed to give teams a shared setup with approved settings and permissions.

Those Codex features are available across Plus, Pro, Business, Healthcare, Education and Enterprise subscriptions. Other changes to developer tools include a refreshed Codex command-line interface, code review, security features and a cloud decisions API.

Plugin push

OpenAI is also widening access to tools that let developers build products inside ChatGPT. Plugin extensions will allow developers to place their services in the ChatGPT sidebar and create interactive panels where users can work alongside a conversation.

Developers will also be able to create viewers for file types supported by their products. These plugin extension features will be available on all plans.

Other plugin-related changes include improved creation, submission and discovery processes, support for websites hosting plugins, and event tools for plugin automations. OpenAI presented the updates as part of a wider effort to make ChatGPT a shared surface for both human and software agent interactions.

Broader strategy

OpenAI described the announcements as part of a push towards new ways of working with artificial intelligence, including agents that can take on ongoing responsibilities and new ways for people and AI systems to work together.

It is also opening more of the platform used to build ChatGPT features so outside developers can launch native experiences inside the service. OpenAI said ChatGPT now reaches 1.2 billion weekly users, giving developers a potentially large audience for tools built within the platform.

ChatGPT Space brings that strategy directly into team workflows by giving businesses a persistent shared area for projects, documents and chatbot interaction. Its release adds another layer to competition among technology companies seeking to make generative AI products part of routine office work.
