Nutanix expands database & storage ties with NetApp

Nutanix has announced a certified integration between Nutanix Database Service and MongoDB Ops Manager, alongside a strategic alliance with NetApp on a new cloud platform integration.
Both moves expand Nutanix's reach in database operations and storage partnerships as customers reassess how they run virtualised workloads and manage data across on-premises and cloud environments.
The MongoDB integration is available now in NDB 2.10 for customers with a MongoDB Enterprise Advanced licence. It is designed to bring infrastructure automation, database management and backup workflows into a single policy-driven process for MongoDB deployments.
The offering targets enterprise users running large-scale, business-critical environments, where provisioning, backup and recovery often span different teams and tools. It supports MongoDB sharded cluster deployments through Ops Manager integration.
Nutanix says the set-up lets users automate sharded cluster provisioning, co-ordinate backup and recovery through Ops Manager, and use point-in-time recovery down to the second. It also links MongoDB operational monitoring with Nutanix infrastructure visibility.
"The integration between Nutanix Database Service and MongoDB Ops Manager delivers exactly what enterprise database teams have been asking for: seamless coordination between infrastructure and database operations," said Ashish Mohindroo, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Nutanix Database Service, Nutanix.
"By bringing together automated provisioning, operational visibility, and coordinated backup and recovery, customers can reduce operational friction and achieve recovery times that can be measured in minutes," he said.
Hybrid demand
MongoDB said the joint work reflects customer demand for more flexibility in hybrid deployments. The arrangement keeps MongoDB Ops Manager in place while standardising some administrative tasks through Nutanix Database Service.
"MongoDB customers want flexibility to deploy and manage their databases across hybrid environments," said Olivier Zieleniecki, Global Vice President of Worldwide Partners, MongoDB.
"Many enterprises are turning to Nutanix Database Service (NDB) to manage their database operations. With its certified integration for MongoDB Ops Manager, our joint customers can now standardise their operations on NDB while maintaining the deep, MongoDB-specific intelligence and capabilities their applications depend on," he said.
Resilience focus
An external industry analyst framed the launch around resilience and recovery requirements as companies expand digital systems and add AI-related workloads.
"As enterprises accelerate their digital transformation journeys and inject AI into their business processes, the increased pace and complexity are making database resiliency a non-negotiable requirement. It's imperative for organisations to move past simple backup to demand surgical precision in data recovery. The integration of Nutanix Database Service and MongoDB Ops Manager delivers exactly this, offering the fine-grained control necessary to meet stringent recovery time objectives (RTOs). When you can provision databases in minutes and achieve point-in-time recovery down to seconds, you fundamentally change the risk equation for running business-critical environments at scale," said Steve McDowell, Chief Analyst, NAND Research.
NetApp alliance
Separately, Nutanix is working with NetApp to integrate NetApp enterprise storage systems with Nutanix Cloud Platform using the Nutanix AHV hypervisor. The aim is to give customers another option for virtualisation and data strategies across on-premises, cloud and containerised environments.
The proposed integration centres on NetApp ONTAP and Nutanix Cloud Platform. It is designed to let customers run virtualised workloads with NetApp storage while managing compute and storage more separately.
Expected features include NFS-based integration for virtual machine migration to Nutanix, data-in-place conversion of VMs through the NetApp Shift toolkit and Nutanix Move, and management at the level of individual virtual machines. The companies also highlighted cyber resilience features tied to NetApp's ransomware tools.
NetApp described the tie-up as part of a broader effort to serve customers changing hypervisors or overhauling data operations.
"NetApp and Nutanix are enabling simple, secure and fast modernisation of virtualised environments," said Sandeep Singh, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Enterprise Storage, NetApp.
"Whether seeking to transform their virtualisation layer, data operations, or both, customers need Intelligent Data Infrastructure at the foundation. With our combined capabilities, NetApp and Nutanix will make it easy to run virtualised workloads at enterprise scale," he said.
Dallas Olson, Chief Commercial Officer, NetApp, said the agreement extends NetApp's position in storage and data management for virtualisation customers.
"In partnering with Nutanix, NetApp is furthering its lead as the premier provider of storage and data management for virtualisation," Olson said.
"Together with Nutanix, we're giving enterprises the foundation they need to build Intelligent Data Infrastructure with the performance, resilience and scalability to grow with their virtualisation needs," he said.
Migration path
Nutanix linked the alliance to customer demand for a gradual path to platform change rather than a single migration event.
"Through our partnership with NetApp, customers will be able to simultaneously modernise their virtualisation platform and tap into the power of Intelligent Data Infrastructure with NetApp," said Tarkan Maner, President and Chief Commercial Officer, Nutanix.
"We've partnered together so that customers can modernise at their own pace," Maner said.
