N-able adds cloud disaster recovery service for MSPs

N-able has expanded its Cove Data Protection product with a co-managed Disaster Recovery as a Service offering, adding a cloud-based recovery option for organisations affected by cyber incidents or site failures.

The service keeps pre-staged virtual servers in N-able's cloud, allowing customers to switch workloads to a separate environment instead of rebuilding systems after an outage. The approach is designed to reduce recovery complexity and help organisations maintain operations while affected systems are quarantined and repaired.

The launch comes as companies face growing pressure to restore systems quickly after attacks that increasingly target both production and backup environments. Traditional disaster recovery models often rely on infrastructure that businesses build and manage themselves, adding cost and operational burden at the point of recovery.

Recovery model

The service mirrors production workloads in N-able's cloud-hosted environment, allowing customers to choose which workloads to protect. It is aimed at managed service providers and internal IT teams that want disaster recovery without running dedicated recovery infrastructure themselves.

That reflects a wider market shift as organisations seek vendor-managed recovery services amid tighter budgets, limited specialist skills, and greater scrutiny of downtime risk. A co-managed approach also gives service providers a way to offer disaster recovery to customers while leaving the underlying infrastructure to the vendor.

Scott Hawkey, Technical Director at PCS, described the product after a trial in comments released by N-able.

"PCS had been using a mix of third-party tools for disaster recovery, solutions that worked but were often complex and time consuming to set up and manage. After trialling Cove DRaaS, the difference was immediately clear. The process is far more streamlined and intuitive, freeing up our team to spend more time supporting customers rather than managing infrastructure," Hawkey said.

He added: "Cove DRaaS strikes a strong balance between simplicity and capability, making enterprise-grade disaster recovery more accessible and strengthening overall data recovery and business resilience."

Target users

The service is designed for organisations that need a cleaner failover path during cyber incidents and a way to limit the business impact of outages. N-able argues that even short periods of downtime can affect revenue, making recovery time a central issue for both IT teams and service providers.

It is also intended to offer more predictable pricing than some self-managed cloud recovery environments. That may appeal to smaller IT teams and managed service providers looking to avoid fluctuating infrastructure costs while still keeping recovery resources available.

Chris Groot, General Manager of Cove Data Protection at N-able, said the launch reflects the changing nature of attacks.

"Downtime and data loss are no longer acceptable risks, especially as cyberattacks continue to target production and backup environments," Groot said.

The addition of Disaster Recovery as a Service extends Cove Data Protection beyond backup and restoration into managed recovery infrastructure, a segment drawing more attention as ransomware incidents continue to test whether backups alone are enough to keep businesses running.
