Lufthansa Cargo adopts IATA ONE Record in live use

Lufthansa Cargo, WiseTech Global and IBS Software have implemented IATA's ONE Record data standard in a production environment, in one of the first large-scale, multi-stakeholder uses of the standard in air cargo.
The companies have successfully exchanged shipment records using the framework, which is designed to give air cargo participants a common way to share data. The project focuses on moving shipment information between freight forwarders using WiseTech's CargoWise platform and Lufthansa Cargo's systems through the IBS ONE Record server.
IATA introduced ONE Record as a unified data standard for cargo transport to support digital data exchange across airlines, freight forwarders and other supply chain participants. It sets out a common data model for cargo information shared through a standardised API.
In this project, the first use cases involved processing data from Master Air Waybills through ONE Record. A freight forwarder created shipment records in CargoWise at Master Air Waybill level, and Lufthansa Cargo's system then received and processed them.
The arrangement links software used by different parts of the air freight chain. WiseTech provides systems used by many freight forwarders, while IBS Software supplies the airline system used by Lufthansa Cargo.
Data exchange
The new standard allows freight data to be checked and processed within a company's own systems before transport begins. It also supports the exchange of more freight data and file formats than previous approaches.
That could give airlines, customers and partners greater shipment-level visibility across the transport chain. It could also make it easier to update, correct or add shipment data through connected systems.
Lufthansa Cargo has worked on introducing ONE Record for several years through pilot projects before moving into broader operational use with partners. This latest step takes the standard into a live production setting rather than a test environment.
Dr Jasmin Kaiser outlined Lufthansa Cargo's position on the move.
"Lufthansa Cargo has been actively driving the introduction of ONE Record for many years to support more efficient, paperless data sharing within the industry. Following several pilot projects, we are now ready to connect to customers and partners even faster and more efficiently at scale. Furthermore, this seamless data exchange lays the foundation for introducing further digital benefits and AI-powered services," said Dr Jasmin Kaiser, Head of Information Management & Chief Data Officer, Lufthansa Cargo.
She added: "We are proud to have used our expertise and experience to help launch another important digitalization project in the air cargo industry, jointly with our strong partners of IBS Software and WiseTech Global."
Early adoption
The implementation comes as air cargo operators and technology suppliers seek to replace fragmented messaging and document processes with shared digital records. IATA has positioned ONE Record as the long-term framework for end-to-end data exchange across the sector.
Unlike older message-based processes, the model is intended to let participants access and update shipment information through connected applications. The open-source standard is being refined through an industry development process as adoption spreads.
WiseTech said the work showed how the standard can be used between separate commercial systems across the supply chain. For the Australian logistics software group, the project also extends CargoWise's role in air freight data exchange.
"WiseTech collaborated closely with IBS Software and Lufthansa Cargo over many months to successfully implement the new ONE Record standard for the shipment record. This achievement demonstrates what is possible when industry leaders collaborate around a digital vision. As early adopters, we are not only proving the value of IATA's ONE Record standard but also helping to accelerate the industry's transition to a truly connected air cargo ecosystem where stakeholders can exchange shipment data seamlessly, securely and in real time. By replacing fragmented communications with a standardized, single source of truth for shipment data, ONE Record will unlock new levels of transparency, efficiency and collaboration across the global air cargo supply chain," said Elias Hatzigeorgiou, Senior Product Manager, WiseTech Global.
IBS Software, which provides the airline-side system in the project, described the arrangement as an important joint effort between established sector suppliers and a major cargo carrier.
"Partnering with Lufthansa Cargo and WiseTech Global, both recognised leaders in their respective fields, marks a significant collaboration for IBS Software. Technology and digitalisation are significant drivers of growth for the air cargo industry, and we look forward to responding to the evolving needs of the industry and leading ONE Record-ready innovation," said Radhesh Menon, Head of Cargo & Logistics Solutions, IBS Software.
The wider significance for the market will depend on whether more shippers, forwarders, airlines and data platforms connect their systems to the standard. Users can link their IT systems through an API to track cargo shipment data and correct or supplement records when needed.
ONE Record is being adopted gradually through a series of use cases across the global air cargo industry. The latest Lufthansa Cargo, WiseTech and IBS implementation offers one of the clearest examples so far of shipment records moving between major operational systems in live use.
