Google reveals Canada’s hottest 2025 searches from sport to politics
Google has released its annual summary of top trending searches in Canada, highlighting what captivated the nation's attention throughout 2025.
The list reflects a year shaped by major national events, sporting achievements, and significant cultural moments, as Canadians turned to Search to follow developments at home and abroad.
Sports highlights
Baseball took centre stage this year as the Toronto Blue Jays reached the World Series for the first time since 1993, generating significant search activity as fans followed their historic run. Baseball also dominated search queries, with questions such as "What time is the Jays game today?" and "How many innings in baseball?" among the most commonly asked by Canadians. The success of the Blue Jays was further reflected in individual search trends, as seven members of the team's starting line-up appeared among the top trending athlete searches. Pitcher Trey Yesavage ranked highest among them.
Political change
The federal election was another defining topic in Canadian searches. People sought up-to-the-minute information on "Canada election results" and closely monitored developments around "Trudeau resigns" as the political landscape shifted. Mark Carney, after assuming the role of Prime Minister, emerged as the most searched person in the country. Political figures including Jagmeet Singh, former NDP leader, and Zohran Mamdani, the newly elected Mayor of New York City, also featured prominently in the data.
Global events
International affairs remained a significant area of focus. Canadians searched for updates on ongoing situations such as the conflict in Iran and the imposition of tariffs. Other trending international news included queries about the fires in Los Angeles, information on a newly chosen Pope, and events within the Gulf of Mexico.
Cultural trends
Popular culture was a strong driving force in search activity. The release of 'Happy Gilmore 2', a golf comedy sequel, became the top trending movie of the year. Horror titles such as 'Sinners', 'Weapons', and the revival of '28 Days Later' drew substantial interest. Canadians also kept pace with trends unique to the year, including 'Labubu', the phrase '6-7', and rising entertainment entities such as Kpop Demon Hunters.
On television, shows such as 'Severance', 'Squid Game', and the new season of 'Ginny and Georgia' featured frequently in search trends. Music-related queries highlighted interest in Kendrick Lamar-whose Super Bowl Halftime Show also captured attention-alongside songs by Taylor Swift and Drake.
Search questions
Data showed a penchant for both practical and quirky inquiries. Beyond baseball-related questions, Canadians sought clarification on new slang and cultural references, asking, for example, "What does 6-7 mean?" and "What is Labubu?" Queries about public figures and developments-such as "Why did Trudeau resign?" and "What happened to Charlie Kirk?"-reflected public engagement with unfolding news stories. Questions about the cost of goods and international affairs, including "Why are eggs so expensive in the US?" and "Why is Israel attacking Iran?" also pointed to broader areas of concern.
Notable names
In addition to the year's major political and sporting figures, entertainers such as Jimmy Kimmel, Kendrick Lamar, Katy Perry, and D4vd ranked among the most searched individuals. The top trends also captured those who passed away, including Ed Gein, Ozzy Osbourne, Diane Keaton, and Robert Redford, as Canadians paid tribute and sought information on their lives and legacies.
"The Search trends show a fascinating snapshot of the events and people that truly mattered to Canadians in 2025, ranging from sports triumphs to significant political shifts and unique cultural phenomena," said Ridhi Arun Kumar, Senior Consultant, Burson Global.
