Fortinet launches FortiGate 1200G with FortiSASE Outpost

Fortinet has launched the FortiGate 1200G series with FortiSASE Outpost, extending its effort to combine firewall and secure access service edge products.

The system is aimed at organisations that want to apply the same security policies across on-premises and cloud environments while choosing where traffic inspection takes place.

The FortiGate 1200G series is designed for enterprise and data centre networks facing heavier volumes of encrypted traffic and growing use of artificial intelligence infrastructure. It uses Fortinet's latest FortiASIC architecture and supports 10G, 25G and 100G connectivity.

In practice, the offering gives customers two deployment options within one framework: they can send traffic through a cloud-based SASE point of presence, or process sensitive or latency-critical traffic locally through FortiSASE Outpost running on a FortiGate appliance in an environment they control.

The approach reflects a broader shift in cyber security buying as companies try to balance cloud convenience with data sovereignty, regulatory compliance and application performance. It also addresses concerns that routing every workload through a remote cloud security node may add delay or move data outside preferred geographic boundaries.

Ken Xie, Founder, Chairman of the Board, and Chief Executive Officer of Fortinet, outlined the company's view of that market shift.

"The convergence of firewall and SASE technologies is creating a new SASE firewall market built for the realities of today's hybrid world. Fortinet anticipated this shift by building FortiGate and FortiSASE on FortiOS and investing in proprietary application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) technology that delivers security and performance at scale from day one. The FortiGate 1200G with FortiSASE Outpost capability advances this vision by combining local enforcement and cloud-delivered security to address customers' evolving sovereignty, performance, and AI infrastructure requirements," said Xie.

Hybrid control

A FortiGate 1200G configured as a FortiSASE Outpost can operate as a local SASE point of presence on a customer site. This lets organisations place inspection and enforcement closer to users and data, particularly in regions where a nearby cloud point of presence is unavailable.

The product is managed through the FortiSASE interface, which handles policy, monitoring, upgrades and lifecycle operations across both cloud-operated and on-site deployments. This is intended to avoid treating on-site enforcement as a separate environment.

For customers, the attraction is consistency rather than location alone. Security teams want one set of zero-trust access rules, one view of activity and one operating model, even if traffic is split between local and cloud inspection points.

Artificial intelligence is one reason this architecture is drawing attention. AI agents, applications and connected devices can generate large volumes of east-west traffic within private networks, and some organisations may prefer to inspect that traffic locally rather than route it to a cloud security node and back.

IDC Research Manager Pete Finalle said buyers should think beyond current network designs.

"Converged SASE and firewall platforms provide the flexibility to meet dynamic, AI-accelerated network architectures where they are, rather than becoming part of next year's technical debt. Buyers that judge platforms only by how well they fit today's environment, rather than how effectively they can adapt to tomorrow's, are already behind," said Finalle.

Market backdrop

The launch comes as cyber security suppliers push harder to tie together products once sold separately, including network firewalls, secure web gateways, zero-trust network access and cloud-delivered inspection services. Vendors argue that a unified policy layer is becoming more important as workloads move across private infrastructure, public cloud and branch networks.

FortiGate and FortiSASE share FortiOS, policy controls, threat intelligence and zero-trust decisions across local and cloud environments. FortiGuard AI-Powered Security Services and FortiAI are also used across both deployment models.

Another industry analyst said demand is being shaped by a desire to avoid a trade-off between cloud scale and local control.

"Organisations should not have to choose between the scalability of cloud-delivered security and the performance, control, or sovereignty of on-premises enforcement. The convergence of these models is creating a meaningful new SASE firewall market. Fortinet is well positioned for this shift, enabling customers to apply security through cloud-delivered FortiSASE or locally with the FortiGate 1200G and FortiSASE Outpost, based on what their business requires, while maintaining consistent policy, visibility, and user experience," said Townsend.

Fortinet said the FortiGate 1200G will be available in the third quarter of 2026.
