Citrix launches dual-boot UniconOS for Windows recovery

Citrix has launched a dual-boot version of UniconOS for Windows endpoints, available in UniconOS Release 7 2607.

The product is intended to help organisations regain access to applications within minutes when a Windows device is affected by ransomware, a failed update, operating system corruption or a configuration error.

A second UniconOS environment sits alongside Windows on the same physical disk in a separate partition. Isolated through secure boot, it operates independently of the Windows file system, allowing users to select UniconOS from the boot menu if Windows is unavailable.

Once the machine starts in UniconOS, users can sign in and reconnect to applications through Citrix DaaS and Citrix SecurAccess with Chrome Enterprise. The aim is to keep staff working while security and IT teams investigate the affected Windows environment.

Recovery model

Citrix is positioning the product as an alternative to recovery methods based on reimaging, central recovery services or standby hardware. Those approaches can be difficult to manage when large numbers of devices fail at once, particularly across multiple sites, because users may need to wait for machines to be reimaged, replaced or delivered.

Instead, the new setup places the recovery option on the endpoint itself. Existing Windows PCs can serve as their own recovery devices, potentially reducing the need for spare laptops, disaster recovery cabinets and separate hardware fleets.

Recovery is triggered by a single reboot by the user, allowing it to scale across large estates without requiring IT teams to handle every machine individually. Devices can also automatically enrol in Citrix UniconOS Management, where administrators can define the default operating system, boot delay and fallback policy, and monitor fleet health.

UniconOS Management also gives IT teams central control over boot behaviour and recovery policies across fleets. The goal is to shift recovery away from manual device triage and towards policy-based management and monitoring.

Regulated sectors

Citrix is targeting industries where downtime can interrupt critical workflows, including healthcare, financial services, retail, the public sector and infrastructure. In those sectors, outages can affect revenue, service-level agreements, operations and compliance obligations.

The company linked the launch to resilience requirements associated with frameworks and standards including the European Union's Digital Operational Resilience Act, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard.

Citrix also said the recovery operating system is signed from shim to kernel, which it argues provides a provenance trail that security teams can present to auditors and regulators.

For organisations that need additional desktop or application capacity during a disruption, Platform Flex can be used to scale resources as demand changes, according to Citrix.

The launch extends Citrix's effort to tie endpoint recovery more closely to application delivery, secure access and fleet management, rather than treating device restoration as a separate task. The product combines an immutable recovery operating system on the endpoint with application delivery, enterprise browser access and cloud-based device management in a single offering, the company said.

UniconOS was formerly known as eLux, while UniconOS Management was formerly known as Scout.
