Blackline Safety wins 2025 Calgary Award for social impact
Blackline Safety has received the 2025 Calgary Award for Social Impact – Business from the City of Calgary.
The Calgary Awards recognise companies and individuals for their significant contributions to the community, with the Social Impact – Business category highlighting organisations that prioritise the well-being and improvement of society through their operations.
"We're incredibly honoured to receive this recognition," said Cody Slater, Chief Executive Officer and Chair of Blackline Safety. "Calgary is more than our headquarters. It's where our mission began, and that commitment goes beyond building technology - it's about protecting lives, supporting communities, and creating a shared sense of purpose."
Blackline Safety has designed and manufactured safety technology in Calgary for two decades. The company provides gas detection and lone worker solutions, which currently protect hundreds of thousands of workers across 75 countries. These safety solutions are used in a diverse range of industries, including oil and gas, utilities, and emergency response.
Commitment to community
In alignment with its focus on corporate social responsibility, Blackline Safety has sustained investments in partnerships aimed at improving health, safety, education, and equity. The company's approach encompasses both local and global initiatives.
Blackline Safety collaborates closely with post-secondary institutions in Calgary, including the University of Calgary, SAIT, and Mount Royal University. The company donates technology and creates practical learning opportunities for students, particularly in areas such as Industrial IoT, user experience design, and entrepreneurship.
Supporting local organisations
The company also extends its support to several Calgary-based nonprofits. These include providing lone worker protection at the Calgary Zoo and supporting mentorship projects for girls in STEM fields via TELUS Spark and Plan International. Employees also contribute time and resources to community organisations such as Discovery House, Made by Momma, Women in Need Society, and the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter through fundraisers and volunteer work.
Blackline Safety emphasises employee involvement in its social impact programmes, integrating volunteerism and community support into day-to-day operations and company culture.
"This award belongs to our passionate employees," continued Slater. "It also belongs to our customers, who trust us to protect their teams, and to our investors, who believe in the power of purpose-driven business."
The Calgary Awards are administered by the City of Calgary, recognising those who have made notable contributions to the area's social fabric. The Social Impact - Business award is among the city's highest honours related to community engagement and positive change through business activities.
Award recipients are chosen based on their impact, the sustainability of their initiatives, and the breadth of their community engagement efforts. Blackline Safety was selected for its range of local partnerships and the continued active involvement of its employees in social programmes over the years.
The award presentation saw Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek present the 2025 Calgary Award for Social Impact – Business to Blackline Safety Chief Marketing Officer Christine Gillies.
